the story behind the song
Remember when relationships just used to be between a kept woman and her man? Gross. For this cover, I decided to flip the famous classic by The Turtles on its head and give it a "Stockholm Syndrome" twist. After all, it's a bit difficult to sing "the only one for me is you" without a hint of sarcasm when you're an avid polyamorist. So instead, I decided to sing the vocals with more of a haunting, creepy vibe to get across what it might feel like to be in a sugar-coated, Xanax-and-Prozac-sedated, toxic relationship. I hope you enjoy this version I whipped up with GARRY B and HVSH for my first release on the Black&White label!
lyrics
By Garry Bonner + Allan Gordon
Imagine me and you. I do. I think about you day and night. It's only right, to think about the one* you love and hold them* tight. So happy together.
If I should call you up, invest a dime - and you say you belong to me and ease my mind - imagine how the world could be. So very fine. So happy together.
Me and you. And you and me. No matter how they tossed the dice, it had to be. The only one for me is you (and you for me). So happy together.
*NOTE: I took the liberty of replacing "girl" with "one" and "her" with "them" to make this a more gender-neutral version.
